Peyto Lake

Peyto Lake is arguably the most spectacular lake viewpoint in the entire Canadian Rockies — and that is saying something extraordinary. A short, well-maintained trail leads from the Bow Summit parking area to a clifftop overlook that reveals the lake’s famous turquoise waters shaped like a howling wolf’s head. The vivid colour comes from glacial rock flour suspended in the water, creating a hue that shifts magically with the light throughout the day. At 2,088 metres, Bow Summit is the highest point on the Icefields Parkway, and the alpine scenery in every direction is breathtaking. Named after legendary wilderness guide Bill Peyto, this lake carries both natural and historical significance.
