The Hoodoos

The Hoodoos are among the most otherworldly and fascinating geological features in all of the Canadian Rockies — tall, mushroom-shaped pillars of glacial debris that rise eerily from the slopes above the Bow River Valley. Formed by centuries of wind and water erosion, these strange formations are capped with harder rock that protects the softer sediment beneath, creating their distinctive, haunting silhouettes. The short trail leading to the Hoodoos viewpoint offers excellent close-up views as well as sweeping perspectives across the river valley and surrounding mountain peaks. Indigenous peoples once believed the Hoodoos were petrified giants frozen in time — a legend that feels entirely plausible in their eerie presence. This is a wonderfully unique and photogenic stop that adds a touch of mystery to any Banff visit. The Hoodoos are nature’s own sculpture park — ancient, dramatic, and completely captivating.
